MINING - Canada, Japan:

FACT:  Kachin people are exploited in the mines, and then have to suffer the consequences of the cyanide compounds that are used to leach the ore, and often find their way into the local water table.

-
*Ivanhoe Mines - Vancouver, Canada - Very close links to the regime in Burma. As the largest foreign mining investor in Burma it operates the Monywa Copper mine in a joint venture with the regime. Rail and power infrastructure in the area of the mine was built using forced labour. The mine could be earning the regime over $40 million a year. - Email

Ivanhoe Mines - Two responses from request to withdraw posted at Facebook:

Sept 27th - Excerpt from response by an employee of Ivanhoe Mines:
"Please do not stick your nose into other peoples business.
Look what it did for George Bush.

If you have been to Myanmar and talked to the people personally please tell me.
Otherwise you do not know what you are talking about.

In all our work and travels in Burma we have never run into the so-called atrocities that the meddlers and world improvers charge the government with doing.

Companies like Ivanhoe and other mining companies do all they can to help the people that work for them and improve their lives.

I also do not want to tell the people what to do - it is up to them to solve their problems and we can help them by making their lives easier not impoverishing them.

Look what a mess G.W. Bush is in for trying to tell the Iraqi people what to do?? "

An Ivanhoe employee attempts damage control:

Your email to Ivanhoe Mines has been forwarded to my attention.
You should be aware that Ivanhoe Mines does not have operations in Myanmar.

As part of the negotiation of the Rio Tinto strategic partnership that was announced in October 2006, Ivanhoe Mines agreed to divest all of its business interests and assets in Myanmar, including its indirect interest Ñ held through its Monywa subsidiary Ñ in the Monywa Copper Project. On February 27, 2007, Ivanhoe relinquished ownership of the Monywa subsidiary to an independent third-party trust (the Trust), pending their sale. The sole purpose of the Trust is to sell the assets to one or more armÕs-length third parties. Ivanhoe Mines has divested itself of ownership in the Monywa Copper Project and IvanhoeÕs only interest in the Trust is as an unsecured creditor under a promissory note Ñ issued by the Trust on the transfer of the Myanmar assets Ñ that is to be repaid once the assets are sold.
